On
September 2nd the students of The Canterbury Episcopal School had
the pleasure of being entertained by internationally known Flamenco guitarist Ronald
Radford. Mr. Radford is well known as
the American master of the Flamenco guitar. Students from Kindergarten through 12th
Grade enjoyed an hour of music intermingled with inspirational stories of Mr.
Radford’s musical and personal journey.
Mr.
Radford began his career as a student of the legendary Flamenco guitarist
Carlos Montoya and studied classical guitar with Andres Segovia. He is the only individual ever to be awarded
a Fulbright Scholarship in Flamenco and traveled thousands of miles inSpain studying the music of the Spanish Gypsies. His concert atCanterbury was a very special opportunity considering he has
performed atNew
York'sCarnegie Hall,Washington'sKennedyCenter, and at colleges and concert halls across theUnited States. This
performance was made possible by the generous financial assistance provided by the
City ofDesoto, Mid-America Arts Alliance and The National Endowment
for the Arts.
The
Canterbury Episcopal School is well known for its college preparatory and
competitive athletic programs; however, the budding Fine Arts Program offers
many unique opportunities for learning, expression, competition and performance
as well. The Director of Fine Arts,
Annette Smith stated that she enjoys bringing professional musicians and entertainers
to campus to expand the artistic horizons of theCanterbury students. For
